Age range: 5-10. Developmental fit: Reception to Year 5 children who are ready for longer sequences, loops and "if object, then turn" without a tablet. Manufacturer material describes sequences of up to 150 steps, obstacle detection, drawing modes and a night-vision style light-up-eyes trick. 3. Sphero Mini Blue: Best portable app robot

Age range: 5-12 (coding depth suits 8+ best). Developmental fit: Children who want something that looks like a toy but opens Sphero Edu: drive, draw-a-path, blocks, then JavaScript. Manufacturer specs list a gyroscope, accelerometer and LED core inside a golf-ball-sized shell. Driving is instant. Block coding needs a short sit-down. JavaScript is there when a child asks for it, not on day one.

4. Makeblock mBot: Best build-and-code kit

Age range: 8-14. Developmental fit: Children who enjoy assembling metal parts as much as coding. Manufacturer material describes a screwdriver build, then Scratch-style mBlock, then Arduino later, with line-follow and obstacle sensors. The first programmes feel real because the robot is something the child put together. This is the classic mBot ASIN B07XR98YYQ, not an mBot2 placeholder.

There is no onboard "AI brain". Schools like it for that reason: sensors, motors and honest code.

Start with age, not the spec sheet. A newly four-year-old usually needs on-body buttons (Robot Mouse). A five- to eight-year-old who should not live on a tablet will get more from Botley 2.0. Sphero Mini and mBot suit children who already tolerate an app and a short setup. If you are torn, read how to choose a first coding robot.

Decide how you feel about screens. Robot Mouse and Botley need no device. Sphero Mini and mBot need a phone, tablet or computer for the interesting mode. Download the app on household Wi-Fi before the first session.

Safety is mostly small parts and charging. All four boxes can include loose pieces. Keep under-threes away from maze tiles, screws and leads. Fit batteries yourself. Supervise charging cables. Stairs and baths are still a no.

Parental involvement is not optional on mBot. Budget an adult for the first assembly. Sphero Mini needs an account. Botley and the Robot Mouse are closer to unwrap-and-play.
