It suits an iPhone owner who wants the current health sensors and will charge most days. It is the wrong watch if you use Android, if you want a week of battery, or if you are buying specifically for hypertension alerts before you have seen the switch in the Health app.
What Apple says is new
Apple's UK newsroom, 9 September 2026, centres the Series 12 on the Health Sensing System and the S11 chip. Optical and electrical heart sensors are new. Heart rate is measured every five seconds through the day, with a complication so you can see it on the watch face. Heart rate variability is measured up to 24 times more often, in Apple's words, and split into a recovery figure and an overall figure in the Heart Rate app. This page does not shorten that to a fixed "every five minutes" interval, because that phrase is not in the newsroom text.
Readiness is the new daily score. Apple says it uses recent activity, training load, vitals and the sleep score. The result is a number from 0 to 10 and one of four lines: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It. That is a coaching label, not a medical clearance to train. A high score does not mean an injury is fine. A low score does not mean you are ill. It is general wellness information.
Daytime vitals sit beside the overnight view. Apple says overnight vitals now include recovery HRV against your own baseline. The Vitals app, on Apple's UK shop footnote, is for wellness purposes only and not for medical use. Blood oxygen is the same kind of line: wellness only, not for medical use. Skin temperature sensing is not for medical use. Cycle tracking is not for birth control or for diagnosing a condition, on Apple's footnotes.
Apple also says Series 12 has the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable, from Apple's own study of more than 1,000 people, and the most accurate step tracking of any smartwatch. Both lines are Apple's claims. This site has not repeated the study.
Water resistance on the UK shop is 50 metres under ISO 22810:2010: shallow swimming and snorkelling to about 6 metres, not scuba or high-speed water sports. Apple says 15 minutes of charge can add up to 12 hours, and describes a 24-hour all-day lab pattern plus a 38-hour low-power pattern. Those are Apple's scripts.
Readiness and Workout Buddy
Workout Buddy is the spoken coach. Apple says it needs an Apple Intelligence iPhone, Bluetooth headphones, and English or Spanish. English (United Kingdom) is on Apple's Workout Buddy list. Without the iPhone nearby it needs Wi-Fi or cellular. A GPS-only watch can still use it beside the phone, or on Wi-Fi.
Buddy is fitness commentary from workout data. It is general information, not medical advice, and it cannot see an injury. Stop if you are in pain.
Apple Intelligence on the UK shop page is available when the language is one Apple lists, including English. Siri AI on watchOS is described as starting in English, with a note that it is not initially available in the EU on watchOS. The UK is not in the EU. Some server-side features have daily limits. Check the watch after setup rather than assuming every keynote feature is on.
Audio Intelligence (Live Rewind and Siri Recap) was described in September 2026 as arriving in beta later in 2026. Check the watch. Apple says raw audio is processed in a secure enclave and not stored, that Live Rewind chimes even on silent, and that saved text is end-to-end encrypted. Do not buy the watch only for a recap you have not seen.
This page could not confirm that every redesigned Health screen is available in UK English. Open the Health app. Labs via Quest in Apple's US material is a US service. Do not expect it on the NHS.

What to confirm in the UK
Apple publishes a long feature list, then tells you to check the country. These are the lines that matter before you buy for a health reason.
ECG. Apple's feature list includes the United Kingdom. The UK shop says the app is on Series 4 and later, excluding SE, for ages 22 and over, and that it is similar to a single-lead ECG. It does not check for a heart attack. Do not change medication from it.
Irregular rhythm notifications are separate. Apple says they are not for under-22s or for people already diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. Confirm the switch.
Hypertension notifications. The feature list includes the United Kingdom. Apple's UK support article still says they may not be available on Series 12 or Ultra 4 while additional clearances for those models are in process. Check UK availability in the Health app. Where it is on, Apple describes a pattern over 30 days, not a blood pressure reading. Sleep apnoea notifications. Apple's UK shop lists them for Series 9 and later, for ages 18 and over without an existing diagnosis. Confirm the tile. A notification is a prompt to speak to a doctor, not a diagnosis.
Vitals and blood oxygen are wellness only, in Apple's words, not for medical use.
Series 12 and Series 11

Apple's UK shop rates it to 100 metres, including recreational scuba to 40 metres with a compatible app, and describes a battery test on the order of 50 hours. Account, data and privacy
An Apple ID is required. Health data can stay on the device and, if you choose it, sync through iCloud. Pairing with an iPhone is not optional.
Apple says Audio Intelligence does not store raw audio, and that saved rewind text is encrypted so Apple cannot read it. Fitness movement features Apple has described run on device, with no video stored. Third-party apps are outside that design. Workout Buddy uses workout metrics. It is not a transcript unless you turn the audio features on. Server-side Apple Intelligence requests can hit a daily limit, on Apple's note.
