A drum (Whisker calls it a globe) sifts clumps into a drawer. A rake pulls waste across an open tray. The Crystal Duo uses a disposable silica tray. The Omega Paw has no motor: you roll it. PETKIT and Meowant describe gears that leave an opening if power fails. That is the maker's description, not a promise. Sensors are a second layer. They do not replace the weight limits.

What to check before you buy an automatic cat litter tray

Check weight and age first. Under the minimum, use kitten or manual mode. On the Litter-Robot 4, Whisker uses weight, not age. Most drums need clumping litter. The Crystal Duo does not. The Litter-Robot 4 is 22 by 27 inches. Neakasa wants about 70 cm above the M1. Many apps are 2.4 GHz only. The Crystal Duo also lists 5 GHz. Weight 1.5 to 10 kg. Not for kittens or cats under 1.5 kg. The German page adds not under 6 months, and not for crystal litter. Kitten Protection Mode turns auto cleaning off. Children should not operate it. App is 2.4 GHz only and logs visits, duration and weight.

Announced 21 July 2026. PETKIT says the entrance is 43% larger than the Pura Max 2 (10.51 inches wide, 8.03 inch threshold). Drum 76 L, bin 7 L, up to 15 days for one cat. On 26 October 2026 B0GYW76MCY was £469.98, in stock, PETKIT-UK. Odour pack B0GYW6BHFH was £499.99.

Cats 6 months and older, 1.5 to 10 kg. The manual says use under 6 months or under 1.5 kg is strictly prohibited. Twelve sensors. PETKIT says the gear is incomplete so an opening remains with no power. That is PETKIT's description, not a guarantee. 2.4 GHz. No camera. Children should not operate it.

Pros: Widest PETKIT entrance here, plus per-cat weight logs. Cons: Dearer than the Pura Max 2 for a similar drum. Six-month and 1.5 kg minimum. 2.4 GHz only.

PETKIT says the camera tracks urination, sends alerts and offers a live view, and tells cats apart by camera and weight. Disposable tray: up to 30 days for one cat. The manual says only PETKIT crystal trays work. A 4-pack, B0G2R8BFLH, was £75.99.

Cats 6 months and older, over 1.5 kg. Kitten Protection mode is for homes that also have a kitten. Wi-Fi is 2.4 and 5 GHz. Cloud video needs optional Care+. PETKIT says live view works without it. EU page: 1 to 15 kg. Over 1 kg (2.2 lb) can use Automatic mode. Under that, and for pregnant or nursing cats, use Kitten Mode and the button. Safety blog: not under 8 weeks; 12 weeks and up is comfortable.

Cheapest drum here from a brand with a support page. The seller is the catch. On 26 October 2026 B0H36KWPM2 was £259.99, only 4 left, sold by TWOPOINT, not CATLINK. If it has gone, open model B0GZP3K2PT was £277.13, Amazon EU, in stock. That listing says 1.5 to 10 kg, a 12 L bin, 5 GHz Wi-Fi and no multi-cat recognition.

Support page: 1.5 to 10 kg, from 3 months if at least 1.5 kg, otherwise Manual mode. Modes are Auto, Manual and Empty. The listing is the source for a 57 L drum, 13 L bin, 38 dB and clumping or silica litter. No camera. Children should not operate it.

Manual: 1.5 to 10 kg and older than 4 months. Manual mode under 6 months, under 1.5 kg, or if mobility is limited. Clumping litter under 15 mm. Multi-cat recognition by weight. UBPET says the integrated design removes the drawer pinch point. That is UBPET's claim, not a figure from this site. App account for remote use. No camera. Children should not operate it.

Pros: Large opening and a UK brand seller, on the listing. Cons: Brand field does not match the title. 1.5 kg minimum. An account for remote use.

Model MW-SC09, largest interior here at 106 L. The title says MeoWant. The brand field and meowant.com say Meowant. On 26 October 2026 B0GJCT8T2P was £319.99, in stock, Meowant Direct. Meowant: 1.5 to 13.6 kg, at least 4 months. Under 1.5 kg, manual mode. Half-gear so the opening faces out, on Meowant's account of the gear.

The bin is only 6.7 L. The listing says 36 dB and a 2-year motor and base warranty. AIR PET is 2.4 GHz only and, Meowant says, records up to 30 cats. The box works without Wi-Fi. Connecting it sends visits and weight to that app. No camera. Children should not operate it.

Pros: 13.6 kg ceiling. Usable offline. Cons: 6.7 L bin under a 106 L drum. Third-party AIR PET app. Large footprint.

Best for: Several cats, if the small bin is acceptable.

Under half the Pura Max 2. On 26 October 2026 B0G6DMY9T1 was £169.98, in stock, Mainwin Store. The listing says 90 L, an 8.5 L bin and about 10 days for one cat. A manual for sibling ASIN B0FLPKZ4RS sets 1.5 to 10 kg, manual mode under 1.5 kg, and Tuya Smart on 2.4 GHz. This page could not confirm B0G6DMY9T1 is that model. Check this listing's manual before you rely on the weight.

No Devoko UK site turned up. Tuya is a generic account for schedules and do-not-disturb. No camera. Children should not operate it. Other cheap drums with no published safety limits were left out.

Pros: Far cheaper than PETKIT, with schedules if you accept Tuya. Cons: Third-party seller. Minimum weight not confirmed for this ASIN.

Here because a self cleaning litter box for kittens is not always a robot. You roll it. A grate drops clumps into a pull-out tray. Omega Paw: no electricity, no filter, no liner, clumping litter. On 26 October 2026 the Large, B0187G1CK0, was £43.57, in stock, sold by 12Paws. No sensor, so no minimum weight from a sensor. You still roll it daily, and a kitten still needs supervision. No account.

Pros: No motor, no Wi-Fi, no sensor rule. Cons: You do the rolling. No odour seal. Clumping litter only.

Best for: Kittens, and homes that do not want a robot.

Are self-cleaning litter boxes safe for kittens?

Only after the kitten passes that model's weight, and its age rule where one is published. Until then, use kitten or manual mode, or an ordinary tray. The table is the manufacturer's figure.

Introduce the unit switched off and keep the old tray out, as Neakasa and Whisker describe. PETKIT's manual says keep cords away from a cat that chews. Children should not start a cycle. Sensors are not a guarantee.

Apps, cameras and your data

An account is for the phone features. On most of these units the cycle itself does not need Wi-Fi. Connecting is optional unless you want the log.

Use a guest Wi-Fi network if you have one. Before you sell the unit, use the app's delete control if it has one. A camera should not face a bathroom or a bedroom. A one-cat home may prefer the Omega Paw at £43.57. Multi-cat homes are the usual case for a drum. These figures are a snapshot, not a price promise.

Are self-cleaning litter boxes safe for kittens?

Not on automatic mode until the kitten passes that model's weight and age. Litter-Robot 4 is 1.3 kg, with no age cut-off (Whisker). PETKIT sets 1.5 kg and 6 months on the Pura Max 2, Max 3 and Crystal Duo. Neakasa starts at 1 kg and does not recommend the M1 under 8 weeks. Until then, use kitten or manual mode, or a normal tray.

What is the minimum cat weight for a Litter-Robot 4?

Can I use crystal or wood pellet litter?

Most drums need clumping litter. Whisker's listing says any clumping litter in the Litter-Robot 4. PETKIT Germany says the Pura Max 2 is not for crystal litter. The Crystal Duo manual says PETKIT crystal trays only. The Omega Paw needs clumping litter too. Check the manual before wood pellets.

Do I need Wi-Fi or a subscription?

Will my cat use it?

Some step in on day one. Others need the unit off and the old tray still out. Whisker and Neakasa both describe that. Neakasa adds manual cleaning first for a timid cat. Do not put a kitten under the weight limit on automatic mode to force the switch.

Do the apps spot health problems?
